Prabhupada Says: Turning a Vast Spiritual Archive into a Fast, Searchable Digital Library

Prabhupada Says is a modern digital library that puts the books, letters, essays, lectures and conversations of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda in one searchable, accessible place, with correct Sanskrit, synced audio and a reading experience that adapts to every reader.

The challenge

A large body of timeless teachings was spread across legacy digital files. Many of them relied on old custom font encodings, so Sanskrit diacritics, Devanagari and Bengali turned into garbled characters on modern devices. There was no way to search across thousands of letters and lectures at once, and no comfortable way to read, listen or share a single passage. The goal was to make all of it accessible, accurate and easy to explore.

What we built

We worked in three layers. First, a Python-based extraction pipeline decoded the legacy encodings into standard Unicode, producing proper IAST transliteration and generating Devanagari, then loaded everything into a structured database. Second, a Go API layer sits in front of the data, so the website never touches the database directly, which keeps the platform secure and easy to scale. Third, a Next.js front end was designed around the reader, with search, accessibility and sharing as first-class features.

What we delivered

One complete library: More than 35 books, 23 essays, journals, magazines, letters, transcriptions, a glossary and a directory of initiated disciples, each with its own browsing paths.

Search that understands readers: Typo-tolerant full-text search across all content, ranked so exact matches come first. Searching a Sanskrit phrase surfaces the verse itself before commentaries that quote it, and typing "Krsna" finds "Kṛṣṇa".

Browse the way you think: Letters by year, recipient or location. Lectures and conversations by year, place or type.

Reading comfort for everyone: Light, dark and system themes, six colour palettes inspired by Vedic imagery, adjustable text size, a serif option and justified text, remembered on every visit.

Precise sharing: Select any passage to copy it with its source reference or share a link that scrolls to and highlights that exact text, with a social preview image that shows the quote.

Listen while you read: A floating audio player that keeps playing as readers move between pages, minimises itself when idle and supports keyboard shortcuts.

Built for every screen: Mobile drawer navigation, responsive layouts and a consistent reading width, plus contextual metadata on every content page to help search engines discover it.

The results

Readers now have a single, fast and respectful home for this entire body of work.
